Shirovasti

A cap of warm herbal oil held over your head — deep nourishment for the mind and scalp.

Shirovasti therapy at Adinath Ayurveda Hospital

What is Shirovasti?

Shirovasti comes from shiro, meaning head, and vasti, meaning to hold or retain. In this therapy, a comfortable cap is fitted around your head and warm medicated oil is poured into it and held there for a set time, so your scalp soaks in the oil. It is a deeper, more intensive form of head oleation than a simple head massage.

The held oil works on two levels. First, it deeply nourishes the scalp and hair roots — far more than a quick oil application can. Second, the steady warmth calms the nervous system, easing stress, headaches and disturbed sleep. Patients often describe a feeling of heaviness lifting from the head as the session goes on.

In Ayurvedic terms, Shirovasti calms aggravated Vata and Pitta in the head region. That is why it is used for chronic headaches, sleeplessness, mental stress and hair problems together — these often share the same root cause.

Why Shirovasti?

Shirovasti gives the head the deep nourishment that a quick massage cannot. Here is what makes it different.

Deepest scalp nourishment
The oil stays on your scalp for the full holding time, so it penetrates far deeper than a normal oil application.
Calms the nervous system
The steady warmth settles overactive nerves, easing stress and mental restlessness.
Headache relief
Traditionally used for chronic, recurring headaches that keep returning despite painkillers.
Better sleep
A calm nervous system sleeps better. Many patients report deeper sleep after Shirovasti sessions.
Hair and scalp health
The held oil nourishes hair roots, helping with hair fall and dry, unhealthy scalp.

Who needs Shirovasti?

Shirovasti helps people whose head carries the burden of their stress — headaches, poor sleep, hair problems, or a mind that never rests. It suits professionals, students, and anyone with long-standing head-region complaints.

Shirovasti is especially helpful when Vata and Pitta are aggravated in the head — the doctor confirms this during your diagnosis.

What's involved in a Shirovasti session?

A typical session lasts 30–45 minutes.

1

Consultation first. Dr. Gaurav Sharma examines you, checks your dosha through Nadi Pariksha, and decides whether Shirovasti suits you and which oil to use.

2

Fitting the cap. A comfortable cap is fitted around your head and sealed so the oil stays inside.

3

Pouring the oil. Warm medicated oil is poured into the cap at a comfortable temperature.

4

Holding time. The oil stays in the cap for the prescribed time while you rest quietly.

5

Draining and massage. The oil is drained out and a gentle head massage follows.

6

Rest. You rest briefly before leaving. Your hair is washed afterwards.

Wear comfortable clothes. Plan a hair wash after the session — the oil deeply conditions your hair.

How do Adinath experts perform Shirovasti?

At Adinath, Shirovasti is prescribed only after the doctor understands your problem. The oil is chosen for your dosha and your condition — different oils suit stress, headaches and hair problems — and the holding time is set by the doctor, not by a fixed package.

The therapist keeps the oil at a comfortable temperature throughout and watches that the cap sits comfortably. Shirovasti is sometimes combined with Shirodhara or Nasya when the doctor feels your condition needs a fuller plan.

Benefits of Shirovasti

Stress relief
The held warm oil calms the nervous system and eases mental tension.
Better sleep
Supports deeper, more restful sleep by settling the mind before bed.
Headache relief
Traditionally used for chronic headaches that keep returning.
Healthy scalp
Deep oil nourishment improves scalp health and reduces dryness.
Stronger hair roots
Nourished roots support healthier hair and help reduce hair fall.
Mental calm
Patients often feel a clear sense of lightness in the head after a session.
Vata and Pitta balance
Settles the two doshas behind most head-region complaints.

Is it safe? Does it hurt?

Shirovasti is painless and deeply relaxing. The oil temperature is carefully controlled throughout, and the cap is fitted to sit comfortably. It is a gentle, fully external therapy.

Tell the doctor first if you have scalp wounds, a skin infection on the scalp, fever, or high blood pressure — the doctor will advise whether to wait or adjust the therapy.

Questions patients ask

What is Shirovasti for?

Shirovasti is used for chronic headaches, sleeplessness, mental stress, hair fall and dry scalp. Warm medicated oil is held over the head to nourish the scalp and calm the nervous system.

How long does one session take?

A session takes about 30–45 minutes, including the holding time and the gentle massage afterwards.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your problem and how long you have had it. The doctor decides your course after diagnosis — chronic problems usually need more sessions than recent ones.

Is Shirovasti painful?

No — warm oil simply rests over your head inside the cap. Patients find it deeply relaxing.

Is Shirovasti safe? Who should avoid it?

Yes, it is safe and gentle. Tell the doctor about scalp wounds, scalp skin infection, fever, or high blood pressure before the session.

What do I do after a session?

Rest briefly, then wash your hair. Avoid rushing into stressful work and avoid cold wind on the head for a few hours.

Can I do Shirovasti at home?

No — the cap must be fitted and sealed correctly, and the oil, temperature and holding time must be set by the doctor.

What should I wear or eat?

Wear comfortable clothes and come with a light stomach. Avoid a heavy meal just before the session.

How is Shirovasti different from Shirodhara?

In Shirodhara, oil flows in a stream over the forehead. In Shirovasti, oil is held still inside a cap over the whole head — deeper nourishment for the scalp.
