Janu Basti

Warm medicated oil pooled over your knee — deep nourishment for the joint.

✓ Prescribed by Dr. Gaurav Sharma after your diagnosis

Janu Basti therapy at Adinath Ayurveda Hospital

What is Janu Basti?

Janu Basti is a warm oil pooling therapy for the knee. Janu means the knee, and Basti means retaining or pooling. A ring made of dough is built around the knee, and warm medicated oil is pooled inside it, so the knee stays bathed in warm medicine for the prescribed time.

The sustained warmth is what makes this therapy work. The oil stays on the knee long enough for the heat and the medicine to reach the joint itself — nourishing the cartilage and tissues, loosening stiffness and easing pain. A quick rub cannot do this, because it never stays long enough.

In Ayurveda, Janu Basti mainly pacifies Vata in the knee — the dosha behind dryness, cracking, stiffness and pain. It is used for knee arthritis, knee pain on stairs, stiffness after sitting, and cracking or swelling of the knee.

Why Janu Basti?

Knee pain needs medicine to reach the joint itself. Janu Basti pools warm medicated oil directly over the knee, long enough to work.

Medicine reaches the knee directly
The oil is pooled over the joint itself, not spread thin over the whole leg.
Reduces stiffness without painkillers
Sustained warmth loosens the stiff knee, so many people find they need pain medicines less often.
Nourishes cartilage and tissues
Warm medicated oil nourishes the tissues around the joint, which dryness and age wear down.
No surgery, no injections
There are no needles and no surgery. The therapy works entirely from outside.
Supports long-term joint health
Regular sessions, as part of the doctor's plan, keep the joint nourished and moving.

Are you facing any of these issues?

If any of these sound like you, this therapy was made for your problem.

Knee pain on stairs
Stiffness after sitting
Knee arthritis
Cracking or swelling of the knee
Knee tiredness after walking
Difficulty bending the knee fully

If your knee hurts on stairs and feels locked after sitting, Janu Basti is made for that pattern.

Who needs Janu Basti?

Janu Basti suits anyone with a painful, stiff knee — and especially people whose knee problem has been building for months or years.

It suits Vata problems in the knee — dryness, cracking, stiffness and pain. The doctor confirms it suits you before starting.

What's involved in a Janu Basti session?

A typical session lasts 30–40 minutes plus a short massage.

1

Consultation first. The doctor examines your knee, checks your pulse with Nadi Pariksha, and decides whether Janu Basti suits you and which oil to use.

2

Dough ring built around the knee. A ring of dough is made around the knee to hold the oil in place. It is shaped to your knee.

3

Warm oil pooled inside. Warm medicated oil is poured into the ring. The temperature is tested on your skin first.

4

Oil kept for the prescribed time. The oil stays pooled over the knee, kept warm, for the time the doctor prescribes.

5

Oil removed, gentle massage. The oil is removed and a gentle massage finishes the session, easing the muscles around the knee.

6

Rest and aftercare. You rest briefly. The therapist advises you to keep the knee warm and move gently for a few hours.

Keep the knee warm after the session. Avoid cold air, cold water on the knee, and sudden heavy strain for a few hours.

How do Adinath experts perform Janu Basti?

At Adinath, Janu Basti is prescribed by Dr. Gaurav Sharma after Nadi Pariksha and your diagnosis. The oil, the temperature and the pooling time are set for your knee — a person with arthritis gets a different preparation than one with simple stiffness.

Our therapists are trained in building the dough ring, testing oil temperature and reading the knee's response. When needed, Janu Basti is combined with Abhyanga, Swedana or other therapies as part of a complete plan.

Benefits of Janu Basti

Knee pain relief
Warm pooled oil eases the deep ache in the knee, often from the first few sessions.
Less stiffness
Sustained warmth loosens the locked feeling that makes standing up hard.
Better mobility
Looser tissues and a nourished joint mean easier walking, bending and climbing stairs.
Joint nourishment
Warm medicated oil nourishes the tissues around the joint, which dryness and age wear down.
Swelling support
Warmth and improved circulation help the tissues around a swollen knee settle down.
Stronger surrounding muscles
The gentle massage after pooling helps the muscles that support the knee.
Better daily movement
As pain and stiffness ease, everyday things — stairs, sitting, walking — become easier.

Is it safe? Does it hurt?

Janu Basti is fully external — no pain, no needles. The oil temperature is checked on your skin first, and the session is stopped if you feel uncomfortable.

Tell the doctor beforehand about skin wounds on the knee, fever, a recent knee injury or surgery, or a hot, very swollen joint.

Questions patients ask

What is Janu Basti for?

It is a warm oil pooling therapy for the knee, used for knee arthritis, knee pain on stairs, stiffness after sitting, and cracking or swelling of the knee.

How long is one session?

About 30–40 minutes, plus a short massage afterwards.

How many sessions will I need?

That depends on your condition. The doctor decides the course after examining you — a recent stiffness needs fewer sessions than long-standing arthritis.

Is Janu Basti painful?

Not at all. Warm oil simply rests over your knee inside a dough ring. Most people find it deeply relaxing.

Is it safe? Who should avoid it?

It is safe for most people. Tell the doctor about skin wounds on the knee, fever, recent knee injury or surgery, or a hot, very swollen joint.

What do I do after a session?

Rest briefly, keep the knee warm, and avoid cold air and sudden heavy strain for a few hours.

Can I do Janu Basti at home?

No. The dough ring, the oil pooling and the temperature control need trained hands and clinic preparations.

What should I wear and eat?

Wear loose clothes that leave the knee open. Eat light before the session and avoid a heavy meal just before.

Can it help arthritis?

Yes — Janu Basti is Ayurveda's classical therapy for knee arthritis. The doctor examines your knee first and confirms it suits your case.
