Greeva Basti

Warm medicated oil pooled over the neck — relief for neck pain and stiffness.

✓ Prescribed by Dr. Gaurav Sharma after your diagnosis

Greeva Basti therapy at Adinath Ayurveda Hospital

What is Greeva Basti?

Greeva Basti is a warm oil pooling therapy for the neck. Greeva means the neck, and Basti means retaining or pooling. A ring made of dough is built around the neck, and warm medicated oil is pooled inside it, so the neck stays bathed in warm medicine for the prescribed time.

The sustained warmth is what makes this therapy different from a quick massage. The oil stays on the neck long enough for the heat and the medicine to reach deep into the muscles and joints. Tight neck muscles relax, stiffness loosens, and the tissues get the nourishment they have been missing.

In Ayurveda, Greeva Basti mainly pacifies Vata in the neck region — the dosha behind stiffness, pain and dryness. It is used for neck pain and stiffness, pain from long desk hours, cervical spondylosis, and shoulder tension that comes with neck pain.

Why Greeva Basti?

Neck pain needs more than a few minutes of rubbing. Greeva Basti keeps warm medicine on the exact spot, long enough to work.

Medicine reaches the exact spot
The oil is pooled directly over the painful neck, not spread thin over the whole body.
Deep, sustained warmth
The oil stays warm on the neck for the full session, so the heat reaches deep muscles a quick massage cannot.
Relaxes muscles without painkillers
Tight neck muscles let go under sustained warmth, without needing pain medicines.
External — nothing invasive
There are no needles, no injections and no surgery. The therapy works entirely from outside.
Helps desk-work stiffness
Hours of looking at a screen stiffen the neck in a specific way — this therapy is made for exactly that.

Are you facing any of these issues?

If any of these sound like you, this therapy was made for your problem.

Neck pain and stiffness
Pain from long desk hours
Cervical spondylosis
Shoulder tension with neck pain
Headaches starting from the neck
Difficulty turning the head

If your neck feels locked by evening and the pain creeps into your shoulders and head, Greeva Basti is made for that pattern.

Who needs Greeva Basti?

Greeva Basti suits anyone with a painful, stiff neck — and especially people whose work keeps them in one posture for hours.

It suits Vata problems in the neck — stiffness, dryness and pain. The doctor confirms it suits you before starting.

What's involved in a Greeva Basti session?

A typical session lasts 30–40 minutes.

1

Consultation first. The doctor examines your neck, checks your pulse with Nadi Pariksha, and decides whether Greeva Basti suits you and which oil to use.

2

Dough ring built around the neck. A ring of dough is made around the neck to hold the oil in place. It is shaped to your body.

3

Warm oil pooled inside. Warm medicated oil is poured into the ring. The temperature is tested on your skin first.

4

Oil kept for the prescribed time. The oil stays pooled over the neck, kept warm, for the time the doctor prescribes.

5

Oil removed, light massage. The oil is removed and a light massage finishes the session, easing the muscles further.

6

Rest and aftercare. You rest briefly. The therapist advises you to keep the neck warm and avoid cold air for a few hours.

Keep the neck warm after the session. Avoid cold air, cold water on the neck, and sudden jerky movements for a few hours.

How do Adinath experts perform Greeva Basti?

At Adinath, Greeva Basti is prescribed by Dr. Gaurav Sharma after Nadi Pariksha and your diagnosis. The oil, the temperature and the pooling time are set for your neck — a person with cervical spondylosis gets a different preparation than one with simple desk stiffness.

Our therapists are trained in building the dough ring, testing oil temperature and reading the neck's response. When needed, Greeva Basti is combined with Abhyanga, Nasya or other therapies as part of a complete plan.

Benefits of Greeva Basti

Neck pain relief
Warm pooled oil eases the deep ache in the neck, often from the first few sessions.
Less stiffness
Sustained warmth loosens the locked feeling that makes turning the head hard.
Better neck movement
Looser muscles and nourished joints mean easier, freer movement of the neck.
Muscle relaxation
Deep neck muscles that stay clenched all day finally let go under sustained warmth.
Headache support
Many neck-related headaches ease once the neck muscles relax.
Shoulder tension relief
Because neck and shoulder muscles work together, relaxing the neck eases the shoulders too.
Better sleep
A neck that is not aching makes it much easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Is it safe? Does it hurt?

Greeva Basti is external and painless. The oil temperature is tested on your skin first, and the session is stopped if you feel uncomfortable at any point.

Tell the doctor beforehand about skin wounds on the neck, fever, a recent neck injury or surgery, or severe numbness in the arms.

Questions patients ask

What is Greeva Basti for?

It is a warm oil pooling therapy for the neck, used for neck pain and stiffness, desk-work pain, cervical spondylosis, and shoulder tension that comes with neck pain.

How long is one session?

About 30–40 minutes.

How many sessions will I need?

That depends on your condition. The doctor decides the course after examining you — a recent stiffness needs fewer sessions than a long-standing cervical problem.

Is Greeva Basti painful?

No. Warm oil simply rests over your neck inside a dough ring. Most people find it deeply relaxing.

Is it safe? Who should avoid it?

It is safe for most people. Tell the doctor about skin wounds on the neck, fever, recent neck injury or surgery, or severe arm numbness.

What do I do after a session?

Rest briefly, keep the neck warm, and avoid cold air and sudden jerky neck movements for a few hours.

Can I do Greeva Basti at home?

No. The dough ring, the oil pooling and the temperature control need trained hands and clinic preparations.

What should I wear and eat?

Wear a loose top that leaves the neck open. Eat light before the session and avoid a heavy meal just before.

Is it good for cervical spondylosis?

It is traditionally used for cervical spondylosis — the doctor examines you first and confirms whether it suits your case.
